Todd McFarlane: “Venom needs to be creepier in spin-off movie”
So I don’t think there are too many people that will argue that Spiderman 3 wasn’t exactly a masterpiece, it fact, it was flat out bad. What happened? This was supposed to be the best of the three, I mean it had Venom in it, a fan favorite. Well, even though the movie was terrible, fans were still able to appreciate Venom, in fact their biggest complaint was that he didn’t have enough screen time in the movie. Knowing that Venom has a fan base, there is talk of a potential spin-off movie.
But where do villian spin-off movies get us? The get us “Catwoman” starring Halle Berry, or “The Scorpion King” starring The Rock. Why do these movies fail? Todd McFarlane, one of the artists who created Venom for “The Amazing Spiderman” comics, believes he knows the answer.
“The reason [villains are] so cool as a bad guy is because they’re bad. And as soon as you try to give too much humanity to them, then you go, ‘No! Now they’re not as good as a bad guy because you’re trying to redeem them’.”
He also believes that if a Venom movie is to move forward, that Venom needs to be a bit creepier:
“He should be creepier than he was in Spider-Man 3. You don’t want to scare the kids, because the kids love the character, but I think you could add a little bit of a creep factor.”
Could a Venom movie work where Catwoman failed? I think McFarlane is on to something here, and if this project does move forward, the studio would be wise to consider his advice.
